About the listing The do & see
Founded in 1854 by Jesuit missionaries, St. Ignatius Mission sits at the foot of the Mission Mountains and remains an active Catholic parish. The brick church, built in the early 1890s, is best known for what’s painted inside it: 58 murals covering the walls and ceiling, done in 1904-1905 by Brother Joseph Carignano, the mission cook who had no formal training as an artist.
The church is open daily for visitors, and there’s a small museum and gift shop next door with mission and tribal artifacts. Mass is still held here through the week and on Sundays.
