Summer in the Mission Valley
May through October. Lake activities, festivals, full-strength tourism. Hot afternoons, cool nights, long days.
Summer in the Mission Valley starts when the lake warms enough to swim and the snow leaves the lower Missions. The towns wake up. Marinas fill. Highway 93 traffic doubles. By late June the valley feels like its busiest version of itself.
It’s also the only time most lakeside businesses, seasonal RV parks, and outdoor outfitters are running at full capacity. If you’re planning a trip, this is when the most of the directory is open.
What’s open
Summer is the only window when every business in the valley is operating. Seasonal RV parks, lake outfitters, marinas, farm stands, and most lakeside restaurants run May through September. Year-round businesses are at their busiest from June through August.

What’s happening
Summer is event season. The big anchors:
- Arlee Celebration Powwow: first weekend in July. The valley’s largest annual cultural gathering.
- Flathead Lake International Cherry Festival: mid-July in Polson. Cherry season runs roughly mid-July through August.
- Standing Arrow Powwow: Elmo, in July.
- Farmers markets: Polson and Ronan, weekly through summer.

What to do outside
Summer opens the full adventure directory. The Mission Mountains are accessible (with a CSKT Conservation License), Flathead Lake is at swim temperature by late June, and the trails through Ninepipes and the CSKT Bison Range are at their best.
If you’re after the popular spots, plan for crowds in July and August. The shoulder weeks of May and September are quieter and almost as warm.
What to expect
Days run hot (often 85-95°F in July) with cool nights (down into the 50s). Smoke from regional wildfires can settle in the valley in late summer, especially August. Rooms book up early for July and Cherry Festival weekend. Highway 93 sees heavy traffic on weekends; allow extra time for travel.
