Wild Horse Island is the largest island on Flathead Lake and one of Montana’s most distinctive state parks. The 2,160-acre island is reachable only by boat. Several summer shuttle services run out of Big Arm and elsewhere on the west shore, listed separately in the business directory; private boats can also land at designated points.
The island is day-use only. There’s no camping, no overnight stays, no facilities, no potable water. Visitors carry in everything they need and pack everything out. Several rough trails cross the interior; the high point gives long views of the Missions to the east and the Swan Range to the north.
The island holds wild bighorn sheep, mule deer, bald eagles, and a small number of wild horses descended from the herd the island is named for. Wildlife sightings are common but the animals are wild; keep distance and respect the space.
Plan for a half- to full-day visit including boat time. Bring water, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, and trail food. Cell service is unreliable on the island. The boat-inspection requirements at the lake apply to anyone launching their own craft.
