Pablo National Wildlife Refuge is a smaller wetland complex just outside Pablo, focused on a pair of shallow lakes and the bordering grassland. Like Ninepipes to the south, Pablo is on the Pacific Flyway and draws migrating waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors. Resident species include osprey, several heron species, and a steady waterfowl population in shoulder seasons.
Access is via the loop road along the south side of the refuge. Most of the refuge interior is closed to entry; the road and a handful of pullouts are the visitor footprint. The refuge is generally quieter than Ninepipes and often gives a more solitary visit.
No fee, no permit, daylight hours only. The Three Chiefs Culture Center in nearby Pablo is a natural pairing for a half-day in this area.
